Really interesting topic: Why so many manufacturers only use 660nm but never put 730nm far red inside their spectrum? Emerson effect shows that only 660+730nm together can enhance the photosynthesis rate~ thats the best match~wondering why?
It’s somewhat complicated. While a combination of red and far-red radiation may enhance photosynthesis, the ratio of red to far-red (R:FR) also influences the plant’s growth and development (photomorphology) through phytochrome. This includes the shade avoidance syndrome, because leaves transmit more far-red than red radiation, thereby enabling the plant to determine whether it is being shaded by neighbouring plants. There is also a time component, as the plant may use the changing R:FR at sunrise and sunset to entrain (synchronize) its circadian rhythms. Finally, an incorrect R:FR, even at very low light levels during the night, may advance or retard flowering or even arrest development altogether. Having said all this, there may be advantages to including fa-red radiation in the PAR spectrum, but it may come with unforeseen and unexpected consequences.
